Equipped for Success
Herc Rentals, a premier, full-service equipment rental firm, leads with more than 50 years of industry expertise
As a company with a 50-year-plus history of equipment rental expertise, Herc Rentals Inc. (previously, Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation), is well equipped to provide a wide range of customers with the equipment, services and solutions they need to achieve optimal performance—safely, efficiently and effectively.
Operating independently since July 2016, Herc Rentals is among the top three players in terms of rental revenues in the North American market, with approximately 270 locations and nearly 5,000 employees. Under the strong leadership of CEO Larry Silber, Herc Rentals has built up a team of well-respected industry veterans to propel the company into its next era as a successful stand-alone entity.
Larry, who has an extensive background in the industrial and construction equipment industry, was a representative for one of Hertz Equipment Rental’s suppliers early in his career. So, when he was approached in 2015 to take over the role as President of Herc Rentals and to lead the transition toward becoming an independent and publicly traded company, he was already intimately familiar with the company. Along with Bruce Dressel, Herc Rentals’ chief operating officer, the company is in the hands of two long-term industry-savvy professionals who are focused on driving continued customer service and ongoing growth.
Just Say Yes
Paul Dickard, Vice President of Communications at Herc Rentals, explains that the company is expanding and diversifying its fleet to serve a broader mix of customers as well as to reach new and growing market segments. Exemplifying this initiative are two specialty-equipment offerings, ProContractor and ProSolutions, providing Herc with “the ability to say yes to customers across a wide range of industrial, construction, government or commercial projects.”
Paul explains, “ProContractor is geared toward the trades, small contractors, and buildings and facilities operators. ProSolutions offers custom-designed solutions for mission-critical projects requiring power, climate control, remediation and pump gear.”
In addition to these two units, Herc Rentals—particularly for the metro New York area—focuses heavily on the needs of local contractors, with 11 branches on seven properties in the region. Steve Durante, district sales manager for Herc Rentals’ New York City operation says, “We have specialty sales reps centered not only on general construction, but also civil projects, which includes bridges, tunnels, highways, and large infrastructure projects, as well as aerospace, which is a growth area for us. So, in our large network of airports in the Tri-State area, we’re not only attacking the reconstruction work of these facilities, we’re also dealing with the major airlines and providing ground support equipment (GSE).”
Additionally, Herc Rentals works with fixed facilities, which would include any building in need of equipment for core maintenance, such as hospitals, schools, hotels, apartment buildings and warehouses—all of which make up a major part of the urban landscape. One niche area of business that’s taking off for Herc Rentals is its Herc Entertainment Services (HES) segment, which provides specialty rental equipment for television, film, feature presentations and special events.
Legacy Informs New Vision
The team views the company’s unique history as one of the catalysts that has placed Herc Rentals squarely at the top of the equipment rental industry.
Paul says, “We truly believe that our legacy company and our roots were what built the equipment rental industry in North America. We have a pedigree of understanding the market, customer needs and managing an equipment rental firm as a strong operator. When we became an independent company, we knew we had a great opportunity to build on our legacy and become the supplier, employer and investment of choice in the equipment rental industry.”
He adds, “We’ve also learned that there are a lot of opportunities ahead of us that we are now taking advantage of as we expand, diversify and refresh our fleet not only to support specialty businesses but also to make sure that we provide the highest quality brand names and reliability for all of our customers, and for us, a great return on investment.”
