Lighting Up Your World
For more than a quarter century, award-winning Foddrill Construction Corporation has been shining bright in Southern California
Leonora Foddrill and her late husband, Jimmy Foddrill, started family-owned Foddrill Construction Corporation in 1993 as a mom-and-pop shop out of their home in Chino, California, with just a $5,000 credit card to keep the business going. Now, 26 years later, the company has grown into a thriving enterprise with over 50 employees.
When Jimmy tragically passed away in 2014 from complications of leukemia, Leonora was faced with an enormous decision: sell the company or try to run the business on her own. The happy outcome is that Leonora chose to move forward, not just for her own family but for her business family—her employees. She took the helm and carried on the legacy that she and her husband had established together, developing her own managerial style that drew from her personal priorities, which resulted in breaking down barriers between management and workforce. That said, at Foddrill Construction, the people are valued, employees are empowered and trusted, and there is a focus on safety and quality.
Leonora remarks, “About three quarters of the staff have been at Foddrill Construction for over 15 years, which is remarkably high, especially for this industry. We are committed to our team and their families. Our people are our greatest asset. They are the lifeblood of the company.”
In spite of the challenges, Leonora is a shining example of perseverance and determination. Foddrill Construction remains a successful full-service street light installation and maintenance company that also provides LED conversions and installs lighting for businesses, security lights, lighting for parks, golf courses, baseball and soccer fields, parking lots, parking garages—to name a few. With a sharp emphasis on excellence, safety, efficiency and attention to detail, the company’s main objective is to consistently go above and beyond to keep its clients happy.
Lending a Hand
Leonora is also dedicated to a number of charitable organizations, determined to use her platform to help others. A fun fact about Leonora is that she owns an exact replica of the 1966 Batmobile and uses the car to bring awareness to different charities, including American Cancer Society, Bark For Life, Relay for Life (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), Bicycles for Homeless Vets, YMCA and Ronald McDonald House.
With a long list of awards and accolades, it is obvious that Leonora’s leadership approach toward her business, her employees and especially her customers throughout Southern California has been a proven success, living up to the company’s tagline: “We Light Up Your World.” In 2016, Foddrill Construction won The General Entrepreneur Award for the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards from the Cal State San Bernardino Entrepreneur Program, and in 2018, Leonora was awarded the Latina Business Woman of the Year from the National Latina Woman Business Association. The company was also chosen as the 2018 Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year.
Additionally, Foddrill Construction was a finalist for the ACG (Association for Corporate Growth) Awards of Orange County for the “Reinventing Category” for business. When asked at the time what that nomination meant to her, Leonora said, “This is what reinventing is all about; it’s taking something that you put your whole heart into and you struggle with it and you rise out of the ashes...and you’re born again.”
