Safety is No Accident
Dunn Co Safety LLC thrives as a leading provider of effective, affordable safety services in the New York City region
Dunn Co Safety LLC provides superior construction safety training, management and inspections throughout the NYC region with focus on health and safety at the workplace. This has been the top priority and a culture for the Dunn family, which is highlighted due to the recent state of affairs in the construction industry with the pandemic impact.
Established in 2012, Dunn Co Safety LLC (Dunn Co) is a leading provider of effective, affordable safety services in the New York City area, from site management to safety plans to a full range of training courses satisfying OSHA and DOB compliance. Dunn Co’s primary commitment is to help the region’s construction and general industry professionals protect projects, workers and budgets.
A Mission of Safety and Service
The company was founded by Owners Lihua Dunn and Shahid Malik, along with Principal Director Ron Esposito (Shahid Malik is also a Principal Director). Their mission was clear: offer professional and affordable site safety training and construction management services to the thriving, fast-paced NYC building industry.
Among its key safety professionals are Shahid, who also serves in the role of Director of Operations and is a professional engineer with almost 30 years of construction experience, and Ron Esposito, who started in this industry at Ground Zero at the recovery operations. Ron says, “I was working safety for Turner in 2001. That’s the way I could get into the recovery effort and safety management.”
The diverse leadership team, which includes professionals like Ron, Shahid and Mike (Michael Spinella), all bring experience and dedication to the day-to-day operations of this growing Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) firm servicing small and big clients alike. Mike, for instance, the company’s training director, is fully devoted to client satisfaction, and Shahid, a licensed engineer, oversees development of site safety plans and legal aspects. Then there’s Dunn Co’s hardworking office staff, led by Karolyn, Office Manager, which helps clients navigate and fulfill city and federal safety requirements.
Daryll Esposito, Dunn Co’s Media & Communications Manager, remarks, “Our team of safety managers, coordinators and superintendents oversee projects and conduct on-site inspections, from major building to façade work. And we have a bench of amazing instructors whose knowledge, experience, and engaging style helps ensure that workers and supervisors are well equipped to recognize and mitigate the hazards of this industry.”
Daryll adds, “New York City comes out with local laws that require significant training. We provide the relevant information and training needed to our clients. To help them navigate the system, we offer consulting and inspection services, we teach them how to avoid violations, and we help them save money on insurance premiums, among our many services.”
The one-stop shop is heavily focused on informing its clients as much as possible and helping to navigate complicated situations and regulations. Additionally, Dunn Co has professional engineers (PEs) on staff, allowing the company to offer engineering services, as well as licensed riggers that are part of the team. The Long Island City-based company also has the extra advantage of ample parking on the premises and great access to the subway.
Safety School’s in Session
As part of its full range of safety services, Dunn Co has its own safety school (Dunn Training Academy) that offers awareness training—both in classrooms and on job sites—covering different topics, including project management, local laws and OSHA certifications, for example.
Regarding training, Ron notes, “We try to be very flexible with on-site training on construction sites for people to get their certifications, including OSHA. We maintain the same requirements as the in-classroom training, but the on-site option can be very convenient so they don’t have to pull their guys out of the field. Job site training also lets us be very hands-on. For in-classroom, we use scale models and visuals for the students. Across all of our services, though, we offer very competitive pricing with plenty of discount opportunities. Most of our instructors are multilingual in both English and Spanish.”
Small Scale, Big Ideas
Although smaller than some of its competitors—with 20+ employees in the field, in the classrooms and in the office—Dunn Co Safety is big on ideas and talent. Ron shares that Dunn Co’s strength goes back to its special level of service. He says, “The bigger companies, with 100+ people, are more like a machine. We’re like a family and we treat our clients the same. I’ve had many same clients return project after project over the years.”
He adds, “We are, above all, offering a service. We don’t make widgets. Servicing the client by keeping everyone safe is our primary objective.”
