Zimmers Landscaping LLC believes honesty and transparency are at the core of its successful business model
John Zimmer, owner of Greenfield-based Zimmers Landscaping LLC, got his start by learning from the ultimate mentor and role model—his grandfather. While his grandfather didn’t technically have a formal landscaping business, he would take on projects big and small for friends and neighbors, and John would help out anytime he could. Eventually, John would take that experience and parlay it into Zimmers Landscaping, a commercial- and residential-focused enterprise, which he founded in 1996 to serve the Milwaukee County area.
An Educated Consumer
John is committed to a philosophy where the only way to do business is to give the customer all the information needed to make an informed decision about the products and services they want and need. He acknowledges that while many people think that landscaping is incredibly expensive, that’s not necessarily the case. He says, “The approach that we always try to go with is that just because what you envision might seem ambitious, it doesn’t mean you’re going to need to take a second mortgage on your home. When someone calls on some of the big landscaping companies that want the bigger dollar, that’s what you’re going to pay for. We’re not super big, not super small. We’re a medium-sized company equipped to handle our customers’ needs at a fair price.”
John shares that of course there will be different price points depending on the products used on a given project but that the most important thing is to educate the customer so they understand what they’re getting for the cost. He says, “There are different grades to materials used, but even from that aspect, it makes sense to school the customer. If they go to a big chain home improvement store, for instance, you might see pavers for 39 cents each. The pavers we do, such as Unilock, will be more expensive, but you’re getting a big quality differential.” So, while you might be able to get a product for less money upfront, John explains that you may be looking at redoing it in five to seven years. He says, “So, you’ve just spent what it should have cost you to do it the one time with the materials you should have used in the first place.”
John goes so far as to provide quotes in which he breaks down all material and labor expenses—even with the company’s actual costs—so that the customer can truly know where they’re spending their money. Zimmers Landscaping will even provide advice on what steps a customer should be watching out for and how a project should be going at certain points so they don’t have a failed project—even if the customer chooses another landscaper.
Main Services and Quality Assurance
Zimmers Landscaping offers a wide range of landscaping services, with most customers looking for a pool, hardscape, outdoor features such as outdoor kitchens or living spaces, patios, and retaining walls. Additionally, many people will call for grading if they have rain issues, such as water in the basement. In those cases, Zimmers Landscaping will come in and do corrective grading. Zimmers also provides design and irrigation services (among other services) to its predominantly commercial client base.
To maintain the company’s high quality standards, John says with pride, “We don’t sub out any work to anybody. We do all the work in-house.”
