Good Mowin’ has cleared a successful path by doing what’s right for its clients and advocating for employees, community and the environment
Landscaping is in Bill Materia’s blood. His grandfather had a landscape company in Florida, and Bill would spend summers there learning the business. After Bill graduated from high school, he began picking up landscaping and hardscape projects, eventually starting family-owned Good Mowin’ in 2000, which has become one the premier landscape companies in Ocean and Monmouth counties.
Along the way, Bill also teamed up with his cousin who owns a paving business that was doing a lot of new construction work, introducing Bill to that industry. Through those connections and hard work, Good Mowin’ has established itself as the preferred landscape vendor for several GCs throughout the Tri-State region, shifting the company’s focus from primarily residential to where it is now, a growing commercial landscaping enterprise.
Committed to Customers and Community
Good Mowin’ counts among its many diverse projects and clients the Actors Fund of America, Winchester Gardens, FedEx of Wayne, Tremley Point in Linden and 63 Stults Rd. Warehouse Project in Cranbury. The company has also done a lot of work for the Lakewood Blueclaws (minor league baseball) along with the athletic fields for several schools, including Mercer County College, Freehold School District, Lincroft schools and Little League, Jackson Township schools and Little League, Keyport High School and Spring Lake School District, to name a few.
As a testament to Bill’s commitment toward the community, Good Mowin’ also provides landscaping services and displays to Garden of Hope in Jackson, a nonprofit organization for grieving parents who have lost their children.
Good Mowin’ specializes in everything from complete landscape and irrigation installations to tree removal, routine landscape maintenance and full-service snow removal services. The company’s highly trained staff, which numbers more than 75 employees, can complete any project, large or small, consistently exceeding client expectations. Bill proudly says, “At Good Mowin’, our employees stand by our motto: ‘Good Enough is Just Not Good Enough.’ ” Bill adds, “We have a very strong management and office staff. They’re what keeps the company running.”
In the male-dominated landscaping industry, it’s not every day you find an owner who not only gives women in his company center stage, but promotes, mentors and pushes them to succeed. Bill Materia is that rare person. Bill is an advocate for women in leadership as demonstrated by his staff: COO, CFO, community relations manager and Good Mowin’s human resources and safety manager positions are held by innovative and experienced women who continue to drive the company forward on a daily basis.
Nichole Gist, Operations Manager, goes a step further, sharing that a big part of the company’s success comes from the fact that Bill is extremely hands on in every aspect of the business. She says, “He is always on-site meeting the clients, project managers, engineers, etc. Good Mowin’ as a whole is very accessible. Clients are always able to get the owner and senior management staff, if needed. We all really value open communication with our clients, and that philosophy comes right from the top.”
Bill adds, “At Good Mowin’, our mission is simple. We are determined to bring value to our clients through our products and services. We view ourselves as partners and always make decisions based on doing what is right for the client, employee, community and environment. We are big on building relationships and connecting people.”
Building Relationships for a Solid Future
From the beginning, Good Mowin’ has been all about building long-term relationships and sharing what its knowledgeable team knows with others. And if they can’t help, they know someone who can. Bill says, “In any situation, we will always do the next right thing and know that our integrity will never be compromised. We view ourselves as business partners with our existing and perspective clients.”
As for what’s ahead, “The plan,” says Bill, “is to continue to grow, learn, innovate, connect and educate. We are always happy to connect with our business partners, competitors and surrounding network to learn and help lead the way for change and improvements in the industry.”
Bill also hopes his own kids will get into the business and that his commitment will pave the way for them to be successful. Bill concludes, “We continue to get the Good Mowin’ name out there, providing our clients with quality work backed by a company that uses its values to drive business every day, relying on integrity, responsibility, sustainability and commitment.”
