The Safety, Compliance and Liability Experts
Enviro Safetech teaches safety and OSHA compliance to commercial building contractors around the world
Jay Jamali, founder and owner of Enviro Safetech, Inc., can trace his introduction to the world of safety to a traffic accident in which a friend was injured and tragically lost his life. Jay knew then that feeling helpless in that type of situation was no longer an option, so he enrolled in a First Aid/CPR class. During that class, the instructor recognized that Jay had a knack for it and asked if he’d like to teach—so Jay took a First Aid/CPR instructor class, loved it, changed majors, moved from Boston to Utah, got a bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, followed by a scholarship to get a master’s degree in safety management … and the rest is history.
Jay was recruited right out of college to work in Silicon Valley, where he spent the first 10 years of his career. In 1990, he started Enviro Safetech, a consulting firm based out of San Jose. What began as a part-time endeavor quickly evolved into a full-time business by 1991. More than 25 years later, Jay has secured his place as a true champion for the field of safety.
Years of Safety Experience
Jay is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and has taught safety management at UC Santa Cruz for 20 years. He has also taught for the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) for the past 15 years.
Enviro Safetech, a medium-sized consulting firm, boasts a total of 125 years’ experience among its 10 employees. The firm’s clientele ranges from Fortune 100 to start-ups and everything in between, including hi-tech, low-tech, universities, military, and defense contractors, with a majority of clients in the construction industry. As Jay notes, “We do safety inspections, provide safety training, provide safety equipment, write safety programs; we’re pretty much a one-stop shop for anything related to safety.”
Building a Loyal Clientele
An impressive 95% of Enviro Safetech’s business comes from repeat customers or referrals, a testament to the stellar reputation Jay and his team have built. Their loyal customer base looks to Enviro Safetech for a wide array of services. Some clients reach out to Jay for general safety training, writing procedures and providing safety officers on an as-need basis, while others are seeking a yearly safety refresher, First Aid/CPR training or even fire extinguisher safety training. Jay says, “Any time they run into something safety related, they’ll call me.”
Often the training they do is very targeted. For example, Jay adds, “If a company has people working at heights, we’ll provide fall protection training; if they have people working in excavation, we’ll provide excavation training. If they operate forklifts, scissor lifts, aerial lifts … we’ll provide OSHA-required training.”
Although Enviro Safetech’s main office is in San Jose and about 75% of their clients are within an hour’s drive, Jay and his team travel all over the U.S. and the world—including Europe, South America, the Marshall Islands and even Dubai—to provide their unique services and impart their deep knowledge.
The Three Tracks
There are three main tracks that Enviro Safetech considers when they evaluate what a customer needs:
This, of course, is a priority in order to mitigate injury and death due to falls or other dangerous circumstances.
If you don’t have a written program, you may get cited by OSHA, etc.
If someone else does something wrong on a job, what is your liability? For example, if you hire a contractor, OSHA can still issue a citation to you!
Given these important points, Jay advises his customers to pay attention to all aspects of safety and compliance. He says, “Just because you’re safe, doesn’t mean you’re in compliance; and just because you’re in compliance, doesn’t mean you’re safe.”
