Trust, Quality, Performance
Arizona-based Lam Building Design’s success is a dream come true
Junier Lam was a 19-year-old Panamanian boy with visions of becoming an architect or a veterinarian when he moved to the United States in pursuit of the American dream. Although he did not speak English at the time, he knew what he wanted his life to look like. Studying architecture and design opened his eyes to the opportunity of opening a drywall company one day, which is where his journey began. At first, he worked for others as an apprentice in the industry. He started with smaller jobs to gain experience in the construction business while diligently learning English. By 2006, Junier was ready to fulfill his dream; he started Lam Building Design, LLC.
It was his entrepreneurial spirit and relentless work ethic that led him to build this company from the ground up. Junier knew his destiny was not to be an employee. Instead, he reached as high as he could working for others, and realized he needed to reach even higher because his potential was greater. His goal was to be a business owner.
He never stopped dreaming, even when the recession hit and there were tough times across the country. He kept his dream in focus and just continued to work hard, a testament to why he is standing strong today. Although he started small, Junier envisioned himself growing to a large company. He never saw limitations—only opportunities.
Over the last 12 years, Junier has grown from small jobs to large commercial projects. He has also become an investor in residential properties; he buys properties and acts as a general contractor to remodel and sell them. He has capitalized on Arizona’s hot residential real estate market by expertly flipping properties. This passion for the built environment has evolved into three companies: LAM Building Design, LLC; NNJ Builders; and Blue Environment Investors.
Because of his impeccable work ethic, Junier earned the trust of a loyal client base. Even early on, his clients opened their arms to welcome him to the construction business. He says, “This was a very big deal, especially having come from another country and not speaking the language.” Junier didn’t let that stop him. He did not experience a language barrier for long; he made it a goal to speak English very well, even as his second language. With this in mind, Junier’s business philosophy, since his earliest days, has always been that you must take a risk for success to come your way. Regardless of the language, fear is not in his vocabulary!
Junier credits his success to experience, talent, dedicated crews and a no-quit attitude to bid—and win—any job. His track record has run long—from tenant improvement projects to government and retail. “Thinking big,” he decided to diversify his portfolio by adding restaurant, banking and church projects, which have included Dave and Buster’s Restaurant at Westgate in Scottsdale; Mountain America Credit Unions in Chandler and Cave Creek; and Lutheran Schools in “the valley” (the Phoenix area). These projects showcase his ability to perform a variety of high-profile commercial jobs.
Investing in Community
Grateful for his success and with a big heart for poor families in need of a home, Junier invests in his community, dedicating his skills as a general contractor and subcontractor to these projects. He shares, “Donating time, materials and labor to build homes for the less fortunate is gratifying. ‘Love International’ hits close to home for me, since moving from Panama to America as a young boy. The joy of giving back makes it all worthwhile. Hopefully, I can inspire other young people to ‘dream big!’ I believe you can’t help other people unless you become something yourself.”
A Man with a Plan
While he works all across Arizona, Junier sees himself expanding beyond its borders and into other states. Next up, he is planning to build projects in Las Vegas and Houston. Working outside the continental United States is in his sights as well—with Puerto Rico first on his list. Looking even further down the road, Junier’s big picture goal is to finish his career as an investor, expanding as far as he can dream. Seeing his projects built all over the world while building a retirement sounds like the beginning of the rest of his journey.
Junier’s mental strength and steadily accomplishing his long-term dreams are what keep him going every day. “The doors that have opened for me,” he says, “have left me feeling very blessed.”
