Family-owned and operated, Maxx Builders owes its explosive growth to the vision and talent of its leadership. Seen here, left to right: Vice President Hira Khan; Chairman Shakil Khan; and President Harris Khan.
A thriving second-generation family business headquartered in Houston, Texas, Maxx Builders has been recognized by Inc. 5000 as one of the fastest-growing private companies in North America, and today has offices in Dallas and Houston, with one on the way in Austin.
Explosive growth requires an uncommon belief in the talent and established processes that ensure each client’s experience is second to none. While expansion has been a top priority over the last four years, Harris Khan, President of Maxx Builders has not strayed from his comprehensive and uncompromising vision. He works each day to ensure that the company stays true to its commitment to quality and innovation—two pillars of service that have made it a general and commercial contracting favorite for clients in North and South Texas since 1995.
The company’s impressive and diverse portfolio includes major projects in retail, hospitality, corporate interiors, gas stations, medical clinics, restaurants and franchises, for clients such as Marriott, Holiday Inn, Hilton, ExxonMobil, Shell and Wyndham Hotel Group, to name a few. All of this success is a direct result of the talent and dedication of the Khan family, who has been focused on quality construction and exceptional customer service since day one. At the same time, its goals of working smarter, pushing boundaries and disrupting an industry with innovative, efficient and collaborative solutions are part of this team’s DNA.
Family Journey
It’s a journey worth highlighting, and one that brought Harris Khan, Hira Khan and their father, Shakil Khan, under one roof working toward a common goal. Hira and Harris helped their father with the business early on, which gave them their first experience with construction.
“My brother and I started doing business in another field back in 2007,” Vice President Hira Khan says. “And due to the economy, I went back to school, and Harris started picking up work on the construction side and went to school on the construction side. I joined the business in 2012.”
Shakil continues to inform their business as a consultant and company Chairman. Thanks to his guidance and mentorship, Harris and Hira have built an impressive company that specializes in design-build, general contracting, preconstruction and construction management services.
Innovative and Youthful Approach
Maxx Builders prides itself on a hands-on management style, as well as embracing change and innovation and using technology to improve efficiencies, processes and communication. For example, the company uses virtual reality (VR) technology and 3D building information modeling (BIM) to put the client in the space. The staff also uses 3D modeling to show proposed projects before construction, allowing collaboration in the building process.
“This allows the client, architect and builder to identify areas that need to be addressed,” Hira says. “VR is useful because it brings projects to life for the client, allowing for greater efficiency. It becomes a key part of the customer journey.”
The team is selective about establishing new client relationships so they can exceed expectations and offer value each step of the way, delivering well-researched, innovative and on-time solutions, customized from start to finish. They have a repeat customer rate of more than 80 percent over the past four years, giving each client a unique experience—and one they can trust.
Harris and Hira have worked to balance their youthful ambition and flexibility with time-tested standards of quality and trustworthiness. They also offer new talent an opportunity to grow.
“We’re a young company, and we hire a lot of young talent from the University of Houston construction department, primarily engineers and architects,” Hira says. “Our company culture is very diverse. We have an open environment, and we all help one another. We hire a lot of interns, and if they’re successful, we offer them full-time positions. Some of those interns have made their way up the company, including one of our superintendents.”
Excellence First
The company operates with an excellence-first mindset, driven by key relationships inside and outside the company. The employees at Maxx Builders know it, and their clients know it. Quality and innovation, safety and service are part of what you get with this family-owned and operated business. Harris, Hira and Shakil have evolved with the industry, developing loyal clientele and building projects that are smart.
There’s a passion here that sets the tone for the company and speaks to the family aspect of what they’re doing each day at Maxx Builders. They’re building a business they can be proud of.
