Opportunity Knocks
I & D Plastering & Masonry, Inc. opens the door to excellence
They traveled many miles to find the right opportunities. Born in Mexico, Dayci Saucedo, and Ivan Medrano relocated to Del Valle, Texas, in 1999 and 2002 (respectively) in the hope of making a better life for themselves. A little more than five years later, this husband-and-wife duo established I & D Plastering & Masonry, Inc. (I & D) with Dayci as President and Ivan serving as Vice President.
The company is a brick and mason contractor, providing plastering and lathing, stucco and exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS) for both new construction and renovation projects. I & D’s clients include commercial, hospitality, retail, restaurants and institutional. Boasting an office staff of seven and field staff of 20, the company serves clients throughout Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston.
I & D has worked on projects for well-known brands like Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn, Service King Collision, Raising Canes, and Public Storage. It has also been known to work with local churches to provide work at a reduced cost.
Masonry is a trusted artform—a craft of building or fabricating with stone, clay, brick or concrete block—and is one of the oldest and most revered of the skilled trades. This fact is not lost on Ivan and Dayci, as it was a solid venue for them to build their own strong foundation and establish a beautiful life for their family in America.
Making it Home Safe
Safety is the foundation for I & D’s success. As one of the company’s primary goals, Ivan personally sets the stage for a “safety-first” mentality. “I am committed to the safety and security of my job sites, no matter the size. All projects are treated with the same level of care. I want to make sure my guys are safe and return home to their families. That’s what I care about above all else.”
Seen in its training policies and procedures as well as overall company culture, I & D consistently provides a safe environment for its staff.
Thanks to a high standard for job-site safety, I & D employs Ricardo Baron as Safety Manager. His primary responsibility is to ensure safety protocols on all job sites are followed, and he facilitates daily safety meetings to verify compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (Part 1926).
Starting out as a subcontractor for other contractors, Ivan personally lived the “why promoting safety protocols on-site” is critical. This, coupled with providing high-quality workmanship, are the important take-aways he made sure to highlight at his own company. “The OSHA law requires most employers with 10 or more full-time employees keep a yearly log of work-related injuries or illnesses. I am really proud that I & D has submitted an accident-free OSHA Form 300 for many consecutive years by placing employee well-being first,” he says.
A Culture Built on Hard Work
Dayci and Ivan are humble, grateful people who give credit to others for opening doors for them when they were just starting out. But to the owner’s credit, I & D’s success is grounded in a strong work ethic. Dayci says, “When we first came to the U.S., we found many good people along the way to help us, and we took advantage of that and worked hard—Monday through Sunday!” Ivan also gives a nod to his friend, a masonry contractor, for giving him his first job upon arriving in the country as a Construction Foreman and then as Project Superintendent.
Former President at Novak Commercial Construction, Bill Paetznic reinforced the company’s work ethic by giving glowing references for Ivan and his crew, citing that they are hardworking, dependable, accurate and attentive to detail, while delivering quality finished projects on schedule and within budget. One project the team worked on for Novak is the Public Storage facility in Austin, Texas. This multistory self-storage facility was unique because it specified an unusually thick EIFS.
“Normally, EIFS range in thickness from 1 ½” to 2 ½”. But this project called for 7 ¼”. I made sure to verify this with Novak to make sure this is what the client wanted,” says Ivan. Turns out, the client wanted to make the building more energy efficient by thermal wrapping the façade insulation. The project was a big success, with I & D’s work being an integral component. Being part of this team that provided an environmentally friendly and sustainable project is a great motivator as they feel like they are “giving back” to their community, according to Ivan.
Checking the box for another successful engagement with Novak is the Wolf Crossing retail center in Georgetown, Texas. Thanks to the team’s performance, Novak continues to recommend I & D for additional projects. He says, “It’s a good thing to stay working in Georgetown because that’s where most of our general contractor clients live.” Dayci adds, “Because we worked on Wolf Crossing and people were impressed, they naturally wanted to know who the subcontractors were on the project. Other potential clients could drive by our work and see the quality of what we do.” Thanks to this beautiful project, even more opportunities were opened for the team.
No matter if garnered through successfully executing on projects or introductions to new clients from friends and relatives, Ivan acknowledges that opportunity knocks for those who answer the call.
Looking to the Future
Ivan and Dayci have big plans for their future. In fact, they established I & D Trucking LLC in 2015. The company offers residential, commercial and material transportation services. Additionally, they added roll-off to their trucking services lines this year. A roll-off is an open top dumpster characterized by a rectangular shape with wheels facilitating “rolling” the dumpster in place and is great for use in construction projects where large amounts of material need to be transported to or from the site.
And the growth doesn’t stop there. Ivan says, “We are planning to buy property and build a new I & D office. I’m envisioning that it will be three or four stories. We have great people and I want a facility where they can be proud as they helped us build this success through their hard work.”
Dayci agrees. “We are fortunate to have employees who care about the company and take ownership. They feel like its theirs…and treat their colleagues like family.” For Dayci, she’s taken that point to heart, training their 14-year-old son David in the family business. “I understand our employee’s situations. When it comes to issues with their family, we are very sensitive and will help however we can. But I will say Ivan always understands his staff…he is the kindest person.”
Like the long-lasting masonry structures made of stone or concrete, the I & D team will remain a pillar of their community. “We take every job seriously. We care about our clients, and each project is a new chapter in the story depicting our legacy. That story includes creating jobs for our local community and delivering beautiful buildings.”
Ivan continues, “This is a great country, and opportunity is why we continue to live and grow our business here. Even though no job is easy, we have special people with integrity who share in the experience of achieving our dreams—together.”
